Bulletstorm and Outriders developer People Can Fly has today confirmed publisher Take-Two intends to "terminate the development and publishing agreement" for its next game, which is codenamed Project Dagger. In a post on the team's official website, the game is described as a "new action-adventure IP" and has been in development for two years.
This isn't the end of the road for Project Dagger, however. People Can Fly has retained the rights to the IP and is now "determined to grow the project on its own". The new game is just one of a whopping seven projects the developer currently has in the works, with two of them being self-published. Other titles include Gemini — a new game with Square Enix — two VR titles, and one more called Red which is in the concept phase.
CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski presumes the two companies will part on good terms, and says the termination doesn't mean the developer can't work with Take-Two again in the future. "We strongly believe in the Project Dagger’s potential and are now committed to continue its development within our self-publishing pipeline. The game is still in pre-production — our team is now focusing on closing combat and game loops and migrate from UE4 to UE5." The CEO doesn't rule out partnering with another publisher should it create a "compelling business opportunity".
People Can Fly is now made up of over 550 employees following recent growth through acquisitions. This year marks its 20th anniversary, and from 2024, it plans to release one new game every year.

Good luck to them. I bet Take-Two wanted a game with microtransactions which Peoplecanfly don't seem to want to make thankfully.
Would not be surprised if Embracer acquires them. 550 employees is a big head count- more than most of Sony’s 1st party.
They make good games, but they aren’t big sellers. Outriders still hasn’t turned a profit I believe. Might be in trouble.
@Clankylad never played gears judgement but bulletstorm and outriders were both really good..
Let’s hope their next game doesn’t literally break my ps5, O wait, I’m never giving them another chance, screw online only for a single player game, what a terrible decision.
Good to see that People Can Get By.
@Northern_munkey I love Gears of War, I’ve beat all of them except for Judgement because after playing it for 30 minutes I said to myself “this doesn’t feel like gears” and I never touched it since.
I wish them nothing but the best. I absolutely LOVED Bulletstorm and quite enjoyed Outriders as well. I hope they succeed and end up with yet another interesting and fun game on their hands.
"Action adventure IP" you say. Go on...🤔
I'm half-expecting Xbox to pick up publishing rights to this so they can add it to GamePass day one.
I frickin loved Bulletstorm and Outriders so I can't wait to see how this turns out. Though, 7 games in dev jeez.
A thoroughly underrated developer. Hope the game is a hit and the self publishing option pays off for them.
They seem to make very Xbox-y looking games. Big muscly marines with big muscly guns in a sci-fi setting.
A potential match made in heaven for gamepass.
ugh my middle school days. Loved Bulletstorm, I would rush home to play it
A sequel to bulletstorm would be amazing.but we will see.outriders is ok.word up son
They are cool devs and I liked outriders.
Maybe Sony can … help…?
(And push the quality up)
They need a sequel to Bulletstorm, but something with a better name. The awesome features of Bulletstorm were its tether/lasso and combo hits system. Calling it “People Can Fly” would’ve been more appropriate.
@Cherip-the-Ripper outriders was ***** man(at least that’s what I got from the demo from a year back).
So they’re going by Ubisoft’s playbook are they? Gee that’ll turn well. :/
@Clankylad what did people even see in Outriders? All I got from my small time with it was at best okay gameplay married to ugly dated graphics, bland menu layout, poorly structured storytelling that felt like it was written by an obnoxious edgy 12 year old and just the feel the whole affair was just riffing on older (and better games). Being unfamiliar with the developers other work, it hasn’t exactly given me a good impression of them.
@Blackjay I know the game had a myriad of issues, but I mainly played it in singleplayer and it 'only' took me about 40 hours to complete it so I've not had to suffer from a lot of bugs I believe.
I mainly liked the difficulty, it's one of the few games I've played that really pushed me (according to the class or w/e it was that I had) to really push and go headstrong into enemies (which I love in shooters and I think not enough games let us do).
I get that it wasn't a looker or its soundtrack wasn't the best, story wasn't out there either but I couldn't be bothered.
I thought the skills complemented my playstyle well and thus had an absolute blast just ripping and tearing.
@Cherip-the-Ripper Fair enough though personally I felt the game’s difficulty curve did not allow for much thinking on one’s feet plus certain enemies (even early on) got much too annoying to deal with. Even the thrill kill aspect felt less punchier than let’s say Doom.
Bulletstorm was a fun diversion but I can not understand the love for Outriders, the combat and level design ranged from average to below average and the story and writing was so forgettable that I legitimately could not name a single character if you put a gun to my head.
Outriders was the most generic game I think I've ever played.
I can see why this is happening unfortunately.
Darn shame about their contract with Take Two being terminated, but happy to hear they can still continue working on the game and self publish!
